After his father, Councillor for Commerce Carl Kümpers, had died, Franz August Kümpers founded a cotton spinning and weaving mill on his own account in Rheine in the same year.

When Franz-August Kümpers, the Privy Councillor of Commerce, died in 1912, his four sons, Carl-Ludwig, Franz-Alfred, August, and Gustav Kümpers, continued his strategy of steady growth.

After the end of the 2nd World War and the reconstruction, the third generation took over the management of the family business in the 1960s with Alfred, Claus, Eduard and Gustav-Adolf Kümpers.

Franz-Jürgen and Joan-Dirk Kümpers succeed the transition to the fourth generation. The enormous cost pressure and the rapidly changing markets also let nothing at Kümpers GmbH unchanged. Most of the production in Germany was closed and relocated to the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In 1990, 75% of sales were still generated with home textiles and clothing. Just 2 years later, technical textiles were the main sales drivers with a share of over 60%. At the same time, Kümpers broke completely new ground with the development and production of fabrics and braids made of glass and carbon fibres.

Under the leadership of Franz-Jürgen Kümpers, the product area “Fabrics and Braids” is being incorporated into a joint venture with SGL Group. The joint venture company “SGL Kümpers” is developing splendidly. Within a few years, sales multiply and SGL Kümpers becomes a recognized partner to the automotive and wind industries.

With Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Bonse another representative of the fourth generation of the Kümpers family joins as managing director. Together with Joan-Dirk Kümpers, he is responsible for the the spinning and weaving company Kümpers GmbH and its subsidiaries in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In order to drive forward the further internationalization of SGL Kümpers, the Kümpers family acquires all shares in SGL Kümpers and changes its name to “Kümpers Composites”. In 2020, an international investor was found to acquire the majority of the shares. Today, Kümpers Composites is successful under the new ownership at two locations in Germany and one location in China.

At the traditional location in Rheine Gellendorf, Kümpers GmbH set up a development and production site again in 2017.
On state-of-the-art self-developed machines, Kümpers GmbH, as the only European manufacturer, produces textile roller towels to the highest standards in an environmentally friendly and resource-saving manner.
In the finishing line, fabrics up to 340 cm in width are singed, washed, stretched, impregnated, coated, calendared, and laser.
Special twisted yarns are pre-impregnated rubber-friendly with self-developed systems.
The development of composite materials opens up another future market for the German location.
The spinning and twisting mill, Kümpers Textil s.r.o., has successfully established itself in the market as a pure sales spinner.

Following the departure of his two cousins from the Management Board, Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Bonse is managing the company today.
